Issues, Causes, and Solutions

Mineral extraction can lead to habitat destruction, water and soil pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and social conflicts, particularly in communities near mining sites. The demand for minerals is increasing, driven by technological advancements and the transition to clean energy, putting pressure on existing resources and ecosystems. The existing note simply says "continue".

Solutions:

  • Implement and Enforce Strict Environmental Regulations: Strengthen and rigorously enforce regulations to prevent pollution, protect water resources, minimize habitat disruption, and ensure proper land reclamation after mining operations cease.
  • Promote Sustainable Mining Practices: Incentivize and support the adoption of innovative and less environmentally damaging mining techniques, such as in-situ recovery and advanced processing methods.
  • Invest in Research and Development: Increase funding for research into sustainable extraction technologies, resource efficiency, and the development of alternative materials.
  • Ensure Fair Labor Practices and Community Benefits: Mandate fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for the rights of workers and local communities, including Indigenous peoples, in areas affected by mining. Ensure that communities benefit directly from resource extraction through revenue sharing and local development initiatives.
  • Prioritize Recycling and Circular Economy: Promote and invest in technologies and infrastructure for recycling minerals and developing a circular economy to reduce the need for virgin extraction.
  • Improve Transparency and Accountability: Increase transparency in mining operations, ownership, and environmental performance, and establish robust oversight mechanisms to ensure accountability.
  • Strategic Resource Management: Develop a national strategy for critical mineral resource management that balances domestic supply needs with environmental protection and international cooperation.
